This week on the podcast, Cam and Jazmine sat down to discuss how you can work with your partner. The biggest thing both talked about was the personalities of both people. With so many personality tests out there, just pick one and go all in (our fav is, of course, the Enneagram)!
When you understand each other’s personality strengths and weaknesses, it’s so much easier to believe the best in that person and work seamlessly through life, and in this case, through work as well! Along with a personality quiz, understanding their love language as well is very important. If one partner receives love through physical touch, well, that might not go over as well at the office as perhaps words of affirmation. Remember, there’s always a time and a place, and work is not the place for certain types of love. Communicating is very important because while respecting others in the office by not displaying PDA, you also don’t want to make your partner feel undervalued. Communication is a top priority here!
Riding to work together, work can be the perfect daily communication time together. If you are taking a car, train, or any other form of transportation together, perhaps you could use that ride home to talk about work, pain points, and other happenings from the office, and then as soon as you get out of the car, vow to not talking about work. In certain seasons it’s tough to do this. Often over dinner, it’s common to talk about work, so having hobbies outside of work you do together helps other conversation starters. You could take a timeout if the conversation starts up, and the main reason you need to have these boundaries is so your relationship has balance!
Be sure to take advantage of taking lunch breaks together and during those breaks, have a conversation together to talk about other things than work. This is an excellent opportunity to connect in the middle of the day.
Suppose you disagree at work, use what’s called a 24-hour rule. If your partner is frustrated by someone’s response to something at work and you have a conversation with that person, make sure you hear them out and then give them 24 hours to talk to that person. This ensures gossip stays to a minimum and protects your relationship together as well!
All in all, working with your partner can be a great option, but going into it intentionally is the best solution to longevity during that time!
