During this episode, the Render team dives into 2021 Design Trends! After the crazy year we all had, it’s pretty evident that events and interiors will look a little different this year. We are all looking forward to some joy + happiness.
Before we start this discussion of trends, we would like to point out that trends are not rules. You see, trends are just what’s hip or popular at a certain point in time. You have control over what trends you implement, and which trends you don’t & could even start your own trends! All in all, it’s fun to see common similarities amongst groups of people and WHY those trends occurred.
More colorful, joyful spaces! After 2020, we all need a brighter and happier space to live in, ESPECIALLY if we are spending most of our time there! Pantone recently came out with their color of the year, “Illuminating” yellow. I definitely believe this color has a lot to do with the new year and a sign of new beginnings.
Cozier Spaces. Think earth tones, natural textures, layers… whatever comes to mind when you hear the word cozy, should be incorporated into your design. Your environment plays a huge role in your health & wellness, so we should approach design with that in mind. Especially now that we are home more, it’s important to have an inviting space that really makes you feel good! A book that I absolutely love is The Hygge Life! It’s all about the Scandinavian lifestyle and how they implement cozy vibes into their everyday lives.
TIP: Think about how you want to feel when you enter a space, then design around that feeling.
More curvy, post-modern furniture! This is one of my personal favorite trends this year! Think: 80s but make it minimal. We actually have two chairs in particular at Render: the Hayes Chair + Lennon Club Chair! These chairs are really cool, colorful, and sculptural! I really believe that everyone is ready for a change, so we will definitely be seeing more unique items this year. The event industry will never be the same, so why should our pieces be the same? Change is good! This leads me perfectly to the next trend…
Moments of Impact. This year is the year for more moments of impact, whether it be at your event or in your home! Something that starts a conversation or brings people in. For example, a unique hanging installation at your wedding, or a large travertine dining table in your home! These moments of impact will make your space feel unique & memorable.
Designating Space! Creating separation and setting intentions for your space will be key this year, especially for those who work from home. Since our homes have become a catch-all for everything in our lives, defining rooms (or space) will help provide balance. Some actually think we will see a movement away from open concept homes this year. Let us know what you guys think about that on Instagram! We are all on the fence, but could definitely see the benefit in having a home with more walls. Another trend within designating space is having a thoughtfully designed home office! Whether that means fold up desks or new paint, I definitely think that it will be crucial to have a clutter-free + beautiful office space this year so that we can all focus and get work done.
The Great Outdoors! Since we all learned the love of being outside last year, I believe that people are really going to focus on making their outdoors beautiful in 2021. Spending time in their flower beds or gardening, having nice lounge furniture outdoors, and even outdoor kitchens. There’s something really freeing about hanging out in a space that isn’t confined. I believe this to be the same for the event industry! There will definitely be a rise in outdoor events so that they can accommodate more guests. On the flip side, we believe that people will start to bring their outdoors, inside! We will see this through adding house plants, accordion doors, or indoor gardens.
Minimalism! Clean out, cozy up! Create space to breathe & only keep items that bring inspire/bring joy. This will look different for everyone, so do what feels best for you. I foresee a lot of people moving towards larger, more sculptural furniture pieces and having less of them. Speaking of minimalism, see our latest blog on how to declutter + organize!
The year of experimenting! The home now means more than ever and crafting a space that is truly yours in PRIORITY. What better year to try new things? Draw up mood boards and get creative! I love to make a photo collage of inspiration and see how they feel together. Anything goes, really. It’s YOUR space & you can make it feel however you want! That’s the beauty of design – It’s your interpretation, your personality, and your space to live freely.
If you foresee any new trends for 2021, send us a message on Instagram! We love would to chat with you!
