Cam here! Well, here we are on the launch day of our new brand and I am just humbled, ecstatic, and thrilled to be here. I’m writing this on the evening before launch day. Why would I procrastinate one of the most important blog posts we’ve written to date? I don’t call it procrastination, I call it game time writing.
My company has been around since 2010, which means a whole decade, and I couldn’t be more proud of where we are today. I started this entrepreneur journey scared, nervous, anxious, and ready to embark on a new journey that would mold and form me into the person I am right now. Someone who didn’t know the trials, hurts, mountains, tragedy, and challenges ahead that would give me meaning and purpose. It’s in those challenges that I have walked through and overcome that have made me the resilient leader and business CEO I am now. Want to go on a journey through the years that have made us who we are today as the Render Collective?
My first business in 2010 was called Plan Simplicity Events, and I’m sure you could dig to find some of the old photos and events I did all by myself and with my very first employee, Kortnie. Those late nights, DIY projects, and grateful clients I had the absolute joy of meeting and coming alongside them on their most important day. I named that company Plan Simplicity Events for the ease of being the person and company that made planning simple for my clients. With so many details and tasks to do, it was my job to simplify and pull together each of those details.
Everyone has that one event that sticks out in your mind that changes their perspective. Mine was in 2012.
It was game time: the wedding day! All of the logistics regarding flowers, cake, and decor per the bride and groom’s taste have been pulled together. Each vendor has checked off their final to-do lists, and it was officially go-time. My team and I worked vigorously to troubleshoot any situations that came up, and through the hard work and intensive logistics, the wedding goes off without a hitch. We end the night off with none other than a classic Journey song before send-off. At the end of the night, my couple sweetly says, “You know, we don’t have the time to sell all of these centerpieces we made and burlap runners. I’m sure you have other brides getting married soon that may want to use them. Do you want to take them home and see if your couples want them?” The night my couple asked me if I wanted their decor began my love for rentals and decor. I started out with small pieces like mason jars, burlap runners, and lace, and quickly I had couples asking for wine barrels, wooden backdrops, and shelving for escort cards, so of course, I added what they requested.
Beautiful Event Rentals was formed in 2014 when a personal crisis moved me to Dallas, Texas! From 2014 to 2017, I poured all of our revenue back into the business to help grow the inventory, pay for the advertising, and keep growing it to a place where I could step into the business full time. 2017 and 2018 were major pivotal years for the business as we went from doing about 100 events per year to scaling to 500 events in 2018. I hired my first employee for this new company, Kaley, and we bought out another rental business in 2017. We hired four more people to the team and said “Yes!” to everything that came our way and ended the year just exhausted. Now, 500 events for a small team is a lot. So in 2019, we rebranded, intentionally said “yes” to events, and figured out what it looked like to scale a rental business. We also decided to add on a floral division of the business to serve weddings and corporate events while focusing mostly on the corporate and social side.
So from 100 to 200 to 500 events, BER grew quickly! 2018 and 2019 were the years that my business went from side hustle to full-on business mode and through tough transitions, I’m now able to teach in a way that considers numbers first and then produces profitable pricing strategies!
At the end of 2019, we had the awesome opportunity to attend the Rise Business Conference in Charleston, SC, and felt the calling to lead other rental company owners. As we sat reviewing 2019 and dreaming up what 2020 would offer, we decided we’d explore what teaching and leading other business owners looked like but wanted to just test the waters in 2020 with the hopes that in 2021 we’d launch an education platform. We also dreamed up interior design as a next step, but again wanted to dabble a bit with it in 2020 to launch in 2021. Well, like the rest of the world, COVID-19 hit us like a freight train and all of our events for the rest of the year canceled or postponed, so we found ourselves furloughing the staff and having not a ton to do outside of trudging through the postponements and logistics that came with it. We heard the outcry from other rental companies in the same spot with no knowledge or know-how to get through a tragedy, and if I know anything about myself, I can be resilient through tough times, so we buckled up and got serious about pouring into our community with the extra time we found ourselves with.
Rental Biz Academy launched in July 2020 and without knowing it, it was a HUGE success! Not only was it hugely profitable which gave us some green numbers again, but it also gave other rental pros hope and knowledge to also make the next best decision and help them strengthen their own businesses. We have now over 150 students around the world that we have the divine opportunity to lead intentionally.
During our planning for 2020, we decided a change was due for the business and the name we were doing said business under. As we dreamed and planned for what that would look like, we settled on a name in February and made the plans to launch it on April 22nd. When March 18th hit and decimated the events industry, we decided to hold off until further notice. We couldn’t be more excited and proud to officially launch that name finally after waiting 8 months to share it.
